Whether making art, or writing stories and songs for children, the creative process is exhilarating. I’ll never stop being in awe of how ideas are born and take shape — for me, never planned, instead they appear as surprising and unexpected gifts from God.
It’s also remarkable to see unconscious material come to the surface when people make art, which is why it’s a powerful tool for healing. During my clinical training, I started an art therapy program for adults afflicted with schizophrenia. When they began making art a dramatic transformation occurred. Not only did their drawings and paintings reveal more than talk therapy had, they began verbally communicating more lucidly than before. It was the most powerful clinical experience I had the privilege to witness.
